In Pre Calculus, students review, practice, and apply most of the skills learned in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, at an accelerated pace and with a broader scope. The emphasis shifts to functions, graphing, equation solving, and applications of these concepts to real-world problems. Students apply what they have learned about algebraic functions to exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. New topics included elemental concepts of analytic geometry and calculus. The goal of this course is to provide students with a well-rounded knowledge base of algebraic concepts, and a solid foundation on which they can build if they go on to Calculus, whether in high school or in college. The curriculum is aligned to the Common Core State Standards in the Conceptual Areas of Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, and Modeling. Preparation for Common Core Performance Tasks and the future PARCC examination will be integrated into the course by using the suggested Performance Tasks and Big Idea Assessments in the CPS Mathematics Content Framework.
