In addition to full-time military service, other opportunites are available to combine military service with college.  A variety of educational benefit programs can help finance a college education for members of the military.

ROTC

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is a college program offered at more than 1,700 colleges and universities across the United States that prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. Military.

In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, participants, or cadets, commit to serve in the Military after graduation.  Each Service branch has its own take on ROTC.

Military Service Academies

For students who want to experience a military environment while getting a first-class education, the five service academies offer a fully-funded tuition that includes books, board, and medical and dental care.

The competition to get in is fierce.  Admissions criteria include high school academic performance, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, leadership experience, community involvement, and a congressional letter of recommendation.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a heavily researched and well-respected aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense.  It measures a young adult’s strengths and potential for success in military training. 

Plainfield North offers the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP) to sophomores, juniors, and seniors during the fall and spring at no cost and no commitment to military service.  The ASVAB CEP provides an interest assessment and planning tools to help young adults explore career field entry requirements and various career paths, both military and civilian. 

The Selective Service System and the registration requirement for America’s young men provide our Nation with a structure and a system of guidelines which will provide the most prompt, efficient, and equitable draft possible, if the country should need it.  America’s leaders agree that despite the success of the All-Volunteer Force, registration with Selective Service must continue as a key component of national security strategy.

All males 18 years of age must register with the Selective Service within 30 days of turning 18.
