District 202 is adding an eighth period to its high school day this fall.

This change, designed with the input and support of our dedicated teachers and engaged community, will enhance learning opportunities and better meet the needs of our students.

Adding an eighth period also aligns with the district’s ongoing commitment to improving educational opportunities for all students.

The high school day will still start at 7:05 a.m. and end at 2:10 p.m.

The new schedule reflects the goals outlined in the District Strategic Plan, and prioritizes academic achievement, student well-being, and increased student opportunities.

This change ensures that our schools continue to meet the evolving needs of 21st-century learners by incorporating additional class periods, more collaborative planning time for teachers, and additional support for students.

The expanded schedule will offer students several key benefits:

  • Increased access to elective courses in arts, technology, languages, and other interest areas that students might otherwise be unable to fit into their schedules

  • Additional academic support time for students who need extra help or wish to deepen their understanding in core subjects

  • Enhanced career exploration opportunities including internships, career-technical education, and industry certification programs

District administrators said the change to an eight-period day was driven by feedback from the community gathered through surveys, District Strategic Planning meetings, and input from various community groups.

District administrators added that these groups wanted a schedule that provides more equity in offerings across the four high schools while also providing students with increased opportunities to prepare for college and careers.

The Association of Plainfield Teachers (APT) has been a strong partner in planning for this new schedule. Teachers have collaborated with the district and school administration to ensure that this change supports both their professional needs and their students' success.

“Our teachers are dedicated to the success of each student, and this new schedule allows us to expand opportunities to support their growth towards college and career readiness,” said Steven Jepsen, Association of Plainfield Teachers Union President. “This is a great step forward for the district, and along with our community, we’re thrilled to see it come to life.”

The new schedule also creates opportunities to position district students to be well-prepared for the post-high school experience.

“We are always striving to build a school environment that fosters learning, growth, and success,” said Board of Education President Rod Westfall.

“With the recent development of 24 additional elective courses at the high school level, this change reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and our desire to provide increased opportunities that benefit all students across all of our high schools.”

The new schedule will go into effect in the fall of 2025, and school counselors are already helping students choose their schedules for the upcoming school year.
